Things got as ugly as they could just two games into Ben Johnson’s tenure as the Chicago Bears head coach, falling to the Detroit Lions 52-21 in one of the worst defensive performances in recent team history.
The first two defensive performances for the Bears have been downright embarrassing, allowing 73 points to opponents in the last five quarters of play, while the offense has had no consistency in the first two games.
Speaking to the media after the loss, Johnson spoke about the blowout loss to the team where he served as offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, and he was extremely blunt about the performance.
“Man,” Johnson said, “it’s a kick in the teeth. Nothing about that feels good.
“When you play a good team on the road and you have turnovers and you don’t convert on fourth down and you give up explosive plays on defense, it can go sideways in a hurry. That was really the name of the game.”
Chicago will have to pick up their teeth after the loss to Detroit as they’ll return home to Soldier Field in Week 3 and face the Dallas Cowboys, who are coming off an overtime victory over the New York Giants. Chicago is already in desperation mode going into their third game of the season, and the defense will once again have their hands full with Dak Prescott and company heading into Chicago.
