Sheriff Bruce Vanoven said dispatchers received a report of a shooting in progress at 8:31 p.m. A deputy arrived at the scene, a home in the 12000 block of South Scottsdale Drive just outside the town of Haubstadt, eight minutes later.

“The shooter surrendered at the scene and was taken into custody and has been transported to the Gibson County jail,” Vanoven said, identifying him as 77-year-old Patrick John Waite of Haubstadt. Waite is being held without bond in the Gibson County jail.

After clearing the scene, deputies located three people who had been shot and killed and a fourth who was critically injured, according to Vanoven. None of their names have been released.

“The critically injured patient has been taken to an area hospital for treatment,” Vanoven said.

Deputies located four people inside the home who were uninjured. The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Indiana State Police and other local law enforcement agencies. The Gibson County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene.

This is a developing story.
